Being someone who was introduced to gaming as a lifestyle through MMOs and seeing its constant evolution by playing every single new MMO that I can see on the market I have been witness to the constant decline this genre is suffering. Leaving aside the old WoW is dead BS and all those pointless discussions about this genre we can't deny entire populations have moved to MOBA, FPS, Hero shooter, survival, sandbox a lot more leaving these huge MMO worlds emptier. I would like to know what everyone thinks is the reason or at least your personal opinion of why you play or don't play them.

Age, pure and simple.
My teenagers are interested in WoW, but mostly because it's a game they can play with their parents that we still share stories and bond over, not because it's "the" game.
Instead, they're doing silly things in Garry's Mod, Terraria, Minecraft, etc. Things with a little more freedom.
Good stories will bring them back though. Epic stories. They enjoy, for instance, each new WoW expansion and the new zones. My eldest son was the first to 110 in our family, completing the story in every zone and finishing his class campaign, and then he was done, aside from joining us occasionally in BGs or whatnot.

I would have to say age and staleness. It is hard to come up with original mechanics for fights in dungeons and raids without feeling like the whole kitchen sink is being thrown at you. Also I think attention spans are shorter which limits the time that people have to invest in games.

I would say... story story story. The mechanics can remain the same forever and ever, but if the story doesn't give you anything new, there's no point. There's no sense of wonder. That's my humble opinion.
And then the story itself contains the clues to make a game good, including gameplay aspects.
